Fertilization can be done whether with classic IVF technologies or microinjection. In classic IVF collected sperm is placed next to eggs and left together until fertilization happened. This technology is applied when man is healthy and the reason of couple's infertility is about woman. During microinjection a single sperm is injected inside the egg with help of a special device called micromanipulator. Fertilization is usually accomplished in 2-4 hours after eggs were retrieved. In case with microinjection first eggs need to be cleaned from cumulus cells which surround it. Then cleaned egg is held with a pipette and sperm is injected into it with a very thin needle. Approximately 70% of all collected eggs are suitable for being fertilized. About 70% from that number will be fertilized. It means a woman with 10 eggs been retrieved can expect for 5 embryos. But it's only average expectation rate.
